About Me

My name is David Carter-Tod. This is my web site. Despite having had a web site since 1994 or so, this one is a bit of a blank slate right now.

Among other things, I wrote a Quiz Generator for Blackboard, which is now intermittently offline and I have not had time to update it.

If it is not working, please try this alternative quiz generator (based on my code).

javascript for rss feeds

Hello David, I found a link that noted you had created a script under Java to obtain feeds from rss sources and display
on an html page with simple insertion. I was unable to find said "new reader". Please advise and have a Happy New Year.

Quiz Generator

I have used your quiz website quite often over the past few years and so have many of my colleagues. I was VERY disappointed to find that it was no longer available. Please email me and let me know as soon as you have it available again. My email is tparkes@eastms.edu.

Script for nocopy for Blackboard 6

Hi David,

I can't find your Tips and Tricks for Blackboard 6. What is the URL for this? Also, please send/post the script for the NoCopy/Print a test for Blackboard 6.

Thanks for everything that you have done.

Prevent Copy/Print in 6

David,

I'm a newbie to the blackboard environment and the copy/print issue has been presented as my first challenge on this platform. It appears that your code to surpress the print can be placed either on the blackboard server or within the content of each exam as the final question. Our organization does not administer the box that houses the courses which complicates placing the code there. Is there a quick and dirty fix to place in all exams? Also just curious if you Knew if this would work similiarly in an eCollege environment.

Also, can we assume we can use the suggested source code tips as public domain/shareware. Wouldn't want to violate any copyright laws.

Quizz Generator

I haven't used the quizz generator in a few months and I went to it tonight and when I picked the Generate Quizz button it sent me to the Wytheville Community College Home page. Is this now a thing of the past or is there another web site where I can generate my test and quizzes?

Quiz generator

Hi,

Is there a way I can access your Blackboard quiz generator? I have found it very useful.

Thanks

Works a little differently

(For anyone else making the adjustment:) I thought it was broken at the College of Southern Idaho site. It's not, but it's a little more picky. Rather than being able to write questions in the form

. Which is a vowel?
*. A
. B
. C
. D

you must number the question and answers:
1. Which is a vowel?
*a. A
b. B
c. C
d. D

Quiz Generator

Yes, the generator appears to be offline. To be honest, I expected more of a blizzard of email, but either no-one has noticed, or they can't work out how to contact me.

I do not run that server any more and have not had time to migrate it to a new box.

Unfortunately, I have other priorities at the moment. I believe there are valid, working copies of my code out there, but cannot find them right now.

Thanks

David

May not be a blizzard, but it's greatly appreciated

There might be a lot of users like me who only go to it every 2 weeks or so, so I just came across it being broken at the old site.

It's a greatly appreciated tool.

Thank you for your no copy/print script for Bb!

David,

I was surprised to see you did not "live" at Wythville anymore. I greatly appreciate your tips/tricks especially the no copy/print. I found a way around it (accidentally~!) using firefox. I downloaded the "no java" for firefox and now if I preview/print a test in Bb I can see the questions. I was wondering if there was anything you can suggest. I want my students to be able to take practice tests but I do not want the questions/answers to be printed out. It makes since that the no java would block your incredibly helpful script but, is there a way around it? This is all too close to the programing for me. So I'm not sure I'm even asking the right question or just a ridiculous one. I teach HS biology and Forensic Science -my programing knowledge is zero! I thought I ask. Thanks again for all you do!

Disabling javascript

You can certainly correct that javascript can be disabled, but in Blackboard, if you do so, I am fairly confident that you need to reload the page. However, if you reload the page, then you can't access the test.

Outside of the Blackboard context, sure, this is a problem. That's why this code is not a sure-fire solution, and there really isn't one for regular web pages.

Hope this helps.

Quck Question

David,

Evertime I put the "no copy code" for BB 6 in the last question as you instructed, however, the code is "displayed" in the last question on the quiz/test.

Where to add the code

Peter,

Nice to hear from you.

1. Add the code to the Instructions for a test.

2. If you are using the WYSIWG editor, you need to switch to HTML mode. There is a button on the second row of buttons. I have also found that you need to have some text in the instructions before the javascript, even if it is as simple as "Choose the best answer"

Some old old code you wrote....

Hello David. I wonder if it would be possible to get a copy of the LDAP.root code you wrote for Manila a while back. I'm pretty handy with Manila so I won't be needing any support, just hoping I can get a copy for a client who would like to try this sollution. Thank you.
